What types of meals should you eat on the Keto Diet?

If you crave fat, you’re in luck. Start your day with a double “rocket fuel” latte, if you wish – and don’t skimp on the cacao butter. Lunch on ground turkey patties with a side of slaw, or a few sausage links. Keto is one diet where you’re encouraged to bypass leaner hamburger and also probe fatty chicken thighs rather than skinless breasts.

Prefer to go meatless? That’s entirely possible, especially if you consider low-carb veggies. Slather on some mayo for a tasty fat boost. As you become easier, you'll end up experimenting with exotic vegetable choices like kohlrabi. If you’re including fish-based meals, fattier fish like salmon will help meet keto requirements for moderate protein also as high fat.

Meal Plan

Here’s a one-day menu of low-carb, high-fat meals from “Balanced Keto Weekly Meal Plans” by Leanne Vogel.

Breakfast

Vanilla Rocket Fuel Latte (1 serving, but you can have a refill):


- 8 ounces brewed coffee or tea, regular or decaf

- 1 tablespoon MCT oil (fats called medium-chain triglycerides are naturally found in coconut and palm nut oil. The liquid product is out there online.)
- 1 tablespoon cacao butter
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts (raw shelled hemp seeds) or choice of nut/seed butter
- 1-2 drops alcohol-free stevia
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 
- 1 tablespoon collagen peptides/protein

Lunch

Turkey patties and slaw:

- 1 tablespoon copra oil 
- 1/4 pound ground turkey
- Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1/3 head green cabbage, finely chopped
- 1/6 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
- Zest from 1/3 lemon

Dressing:

- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1/9 cup tahini
- 1/3 clove garlic, minced
- 1/3 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 1/3 tablespoons apple vinegar 
- 2/3 tablespoons MCT oil
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper

Dinner

Zucchini pasta and Italian sausage:

- 1/2 tablespoons copra oil 
- 1 Italian sausage link (fully cooked), thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 2 garlic cloves, grated
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 zucchini, spiralized
- Sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Snack

Coconut cacao bites:

- 1/12 cup copra oil 
- 1/12 cup almond butter
- 2/3 tablespoons cacao powder
- 3 drops alcohol-free stevia
